I'm looking for a switch that I can plug a light into that turns on and off every 5 minutes. On for 5 minutes, then off for 5 minutes, then on for 5 minutes, a constant cycle. The closest I can find is hourly switches, nothing in the 5 minute range.
And got the following answer:
Short Cycle timers can be tuff to find. Here's one that does a 20 minute On/Off continuous cycle. It replaces a regular light switch in the wall. It can switch,,for example,,a hard-wired ceiling light fixture,,,or a switched wall receptacle. To use it as a portable timer,,,you would have to *mount it in a box with a cover, like a weatherproof /outdoor receptacle box for instance. * add a power cord to plug it in *Then add an outlet receptacle /or female connector cord. http://www.intermatic.com/images/instruction_sheets/e1100.pdfh This place has 'em,,,$36.00 http://beverlyhillselectric.stores.yahoo.net/e1221.html Intermatic also has separate Timers http://www.intermatic.com/Default.asp?action=subcat&sid=90&cid=51&did=5 Those can get to very short times,,,price range is about $110 Here's a guy on Ebay selling the 30minute model,, That would do exactly what you want & allow you some "adjustment" room. Minimum Time>30 seconds Max Time per clock cycle,,15minutes On & 15minutes Off (Intermatic's 4Hr model has MINIMUM 2 Minutes between Events MAX of 2 Hours Off & 2Hrs On) http://cgi.ebay.com/INTERMATIC-REPEAT-CYCLE-TIMER-MOD-C8835-NNIB-NR_W0QQitemZ160054234580QQihZ006QQcategoryZ78206QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Here's Intermatics specs on it http://www.intermatic.com/images/instruction_sheets/c8835.pdf ............................... Intermatic has been making timers since caveman days,,,and their website/instructions are still Not very clear. The DIAL completes a Full Revolution according to the Model's "time". So their 5 Minute Model completes a Full Cycle in 5 Minutes,,and a 1 Hour Model takes 1 Hr to make a Full Turn,,etc, etc During that CYCLE Time,,,the "Trippers" which trigger the On/Off switching are what establishes the Number of Events,,,and When they Begin & End The Dials of all the models have 120 Slots for Trippers. Each Slot represents a corresponding amount of Time. Like,,120th of 5 Minutes on the 5min Model,,or 2.5seconds. 120th of 1 hr on a 1hr model,,,30seconds. or 15 Second interval per slot/space on a 30 Minute Model. A 5 MINUTE Model would NOT work for You,,,because it does a Full Cycle in 5 minutes. *Switch ON at "Zero" *Run 5 Minutes then switch OFF,,, *But it would be Right back a ZERO & Switch ON Again *You'd have NO "Off Time" You would need a 10 Minute Clock---at MINIMUM--to get a 5&5 On/Off cycle. ON Trip at "Zero" >>> OFF Trip at 5min>>>Then 5 min Later it'd be back around to Zero again,,and hit the ON tripper. A 30 Minute Clock would give you (6) 5Minute Events (3) 5Min ON (3) 5Min OFF Every 30 minutes ,Clock would be back ound to ZERO,,and begin the cycle again A 1Hr Clock,,(12) 5Min Events 6 On,,6 Off A Longer Duration Clock can have More Events per Full-Cycle,,,but the Minimum Time between Events is increased. The 4 hr model,,can have 48 5min events before it Repeats the cycle. The MINIMUM TIME between events is about 2 minutes The Reason that I'm saying that,,is becuase if there's Any Chance you may need to adjust that 5&5 schedule,, You'll need to consider the Clock's Cycle time & minimum intervals. Those Timers are meant to be permanently installed,,,and they're obviously NOT "home decorator items". You can make them PORTABLE,,by simply installing power cord /outlet cord,,instead of "Line In/Load Line Out" A quality extension cord of appropriate amp rating makes a good & simple "conversion kit" I dunno if any one that is what you have in mind,, But it will do what ya want,,5min On/5 min Off for as long as ya have power supply to the timer. Good luck!
