I just replaced a three way light switch, now my lights won't turn off. There is a side by side light switch (2 switches in the same unit). Both switches are three way switches. One controls the entry way lights. The other switch controls the lights at the top of the stairs. When we moved in, the switch that controls the entry light was broken. I went and bought the replacement switch (had to order it online actually) and installed it. I turned the power off at the box. Disconnected one wire at a time and reconnected it to the corresponding spot on the new switch. When I turned the power back on, the entry way light switch (the previously broken switch) worked perfectly but the light at the top of the stairs would not turn off regardless of the position of the downstairs or upstairs switch. I then swapped the 2 wires that connect at the bottom of the switch. That arrangement allowed me to turn the lights on and off at the bottom of the stairs but the switch at the top of the stairs does nothing. Will not turn on or off. Let me describe the switch. It is a "Cooper Combination Two 3-Way Switch". There are two three-way light switches sitting next to each other. There are 2 gold screws on top of the unit (one for each switch). On the bottom of the unit (from left to right) there is another gold screw, a black screw, another black screw, and another gold screw. A gold and black screw for each switch. The black screws are labeled as "Line". The other screws are not labeled. For the switch in question, there is a purple wire attached to the top gold screw. There is a different purple wire attached to the bottom gold screw, and there is a yellow wire attached to the black screw. This is how it was attached to the original switch that had the same configuration. The lights worked perfectly in that configuration as well. When I turn the power on to this configuration, the light never turns off. It is like it has a continual power source despite the switches being flipped in any combination. It is wired exactly like the other light (the entry light) is and the other light works perfectly. I am very confused. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I want to mention it for the sake of completeness. In the same project, I replaced two of our outside GFCI outlets that are on the same circuit. Those both work now that I replaced them. Could those outlets have changed something in the circuit? I am a complete amateur but this doesn't seem like a project that should be this difficult. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. I ask that you keep the language easy for a laymen to understand. Thanks in advance. I have tried a number of different wire configurations. I have swapped the top and bottom purple wires. It has the same result. Lights won't turn off. When I turned the power off at the box, I had to turn two circuits off in order to work on the switch safely. As I have been trying to diagnose the problem, I decided to turn one circuit off to see what was getting power and then switching the breakers to see if there were any anomallies. I found that as long as one of the circuits was on at the box everything was getting power. This was not the case before we started the work. I have added 2 outdoor GFCI outlets and replaced the switch. Could these be doing anything to bridge the circuits together?

If it worked before and it now does not work after you replaced the switch, you did not connect the wires to the correct terminals. Get a diagram of a three way switch circuit and move the wires to the correct terminal.
