Here's a drawing of how the basic components work. In particular, a 24 volt transformer supplies low voltage (and current) to a control valve and is controlled by a thermostatic switch - or thermostat. The current needed to operate the thermostat and gas valve is much lower than what the rest of the components in your furnace will require. However, the circuit the heater is on is powered through a 15 amp breaker. Since code requires 14 gage wire run on that circuit it must be 14 gage. Internal wiring inside only needs to meet the needs of the equipment. Have you ever opened up your stereo? LOTS of wires in there. NONE of them are as big as the power cord coming in. Right?
