Ridiculous asked Is there a way to make two tiny objects remotely emit a sound when they seperate a certain distance?
If the two objects (smaller than a grain of rice) extend past a certain distance from each other a sound is emitted to say maybe an Mp3 player or better just an earbud.. Does anyone know if this is possible? Where would I go to see if this technology is possible? Thanks

If you only have the two objects using electronics, it is only a maybe (with no certainty), with a lot of development (of microcircuits etc). This would be very expensive. There is no clear cut path to doing this. One of the many problems is the power supply, not available off the shelf, and any proximity sensor that is so small and can work with such a small size and power. Also communicating the signal to the ear bud and detection of range takes power, such a small object does not have even if you did make a small enough battery. The closest to an electronic solution I can think of is if one object was a strong magnet this size it could be detected at some distance, maybe 1cm, and that could be used as a proximity sensor not needing a power source. Fitting a power supply and detector in such a small package is not possible without very significant development. You could think outside the box and try to utilise an insect somehow. Otherwise you are stuck with a field. These are electric, magnetic, gravity, sound, and electromagnetic waves such as IR, light, radio etc. With some of these you can illuminate the objects with an external field (e.g. light). However to detect the two objects from a third object that has a power supply and drives the sound source and measures their distance apart is far more achievable. Some ideas: A camera to identify the two objects and measure distance, and trigger the alarm. Probably a small computer like a raspberry pi could operate the camera and do the calculations. If not, a PC. If the two devices were magnetic materials they could be placed above an x,y magnetic sensor matrix that sensed their position and the controller for this measures the distance and sends the alarm. Others using a similar idea: An x,y electric field sensor matrix An x,y pressure sensitive matrix. An x.y temperature sensor matrix. Some sort of flow disturbance, using air or water. Some sort of induction along the lines of gold or mine detector. Some sort of ultrasound scanner that can locate the two objects (probably inside a tank of water) Sensing and measuring position in 3 dimensions would be more tricky. Maybe one of the fields above, or a sound field, or a scanning laser (sort of a camera arrangement really). It all depends what the big picture is, what you are trying to achieve, the distances, how rapid, how accurate. At a larger scale there are more likely to be off the shelf devices for proximity sensing using induction and capacitance, sound, light and infrared that might help. Probably the closest to an off the shelf solution (at least for hardware) is the camera arrangement. These are already used this way for industrial positioning of small objects with great accuracy. An identity implant chip is shown in the link below, compared to a grain of rice. Inside is a coil to transmit signals as well as to receive power wirelessly from the reader, which is a much larger device (hand held). There is also a capacitor (for the power) and an integrated circuit inside that generates the signal to transmit to the reader by inductive coupling. I have had some experience with these. The device only sends a number, the identity of the chip. Presumably with a lot of money the integrated circuit can incorporate some kind of ranging based on light or induction or magnetic field or temperature (thermal IR) in the chip. The device could be better if bigger, probably not work at all if smaller. The maximum distance from the reader these work is something like 10cm.
