I have a 12vdc power supply powering a 12vdc bulb and I would like to maximize the bulbs life by adding a resistor yet still keep it bright enough to visibly see. I purchased a 270 ohm, 1/2 watt, 5% tolerance package of 5 resistors just in the hopes of getting close to right but I don't really know for sure anything about resistors. Can you help? The resistors are returnable if they are the wrong size.

Without knowing the current rating of the bulb it is really hard to call. 1resistor will give you 40 ma of current which is pretty low. I would suggest that you check on the current rating of the bulb because most places won't want an open pack of resistors back. The trick with a parallel circuit with multiple identical resistors is that each will supply the same amount of current so the for each resistor you parallel you will get 40 ma. So start with one resistor and add, one at a time until the lamp is bright enough. If you are wondering, parallel means that the resistors a side by side hooked to each other. The battery goes to one end of the bundle and the lamp goes to the other end.
