the thing i am building is a cat toy. you put a special tag on the cats collar and when the cat walks by the thing, the chip on its collar triggers a pulse to a micro controller. i originally used RFID but i changed it because it was too expensive and i couldn't find a standalone RFID reader (they all had to be connected to a computer). then i used a magnetic sensor, but the range was way to low and the magnets were too heavy. now i have been planning to use an ir light in the collar and then sensors all around the main thing. i thought this was a great idea but then i realized that if it was a button cell battery the was powering the chip 24/7, it would run out of battery pretty quickly. can someone tell me maybe about how long it would last or something else i could use. it has to be a moderate price (as cheap as possible), it cant weigh the cats neck down too much, and it has to be able to go a long time without the battery having to replaced on the chip (the main thing will be plugged in). GisbonEssGee, i cant do that because it is too expensive and it has to be able to sense it when the cat is higher or lower then the sensor.

The LEDs could be pulsed with a small duty cycle like 10us on, 100ms off. This gives the chance to also increase the current in the pulse. With 100mA pulse (from a storage capacitor) there would be a power saving of 1000 times compared to 10mA continuous. I don't know how regularly you need to check - maybe once a second is enough. It would probably need a 3V battery. The leds in remote controls have a brief pulse of about 1 amp to help with the distance. If pulsed too long or too often the led is destroyed. I have a feeling this could end up more bulky than you want. Look up data sheets. A variation is to pulse an IR led beam (even scan it) at the receiver. A detector on the cat flashes an LED on the cat to alert the receiver that the scan was detected. This could save power at the cat end as it is 2 way communication. Another idea is a wireless remote for a garage door opener. These can be bought as low cost kits. The key fob "button" would need to be pulsed regularly. The receiver is powered from the wall outlet. Not sure how well this matches your needs. This has a greater range than most of the other ideas here. It may be that the RFID works too. You said you have a microcontroller. Many receivers will have a serial port output that interfaces readily with a microcontroller. Also it should be possible to pick out the signal along the receive chain, as you don't need the ID, just a proximity switch. The signal is probably a serial data signal that can be detected electrically without a computer for decoding, e.g just checking the length of the message from the reader using simple hardware (pulse detection). The orientation of the coils is important in these, and the range may be limited, depends on the type you have.. Thinking proximity sensors, it may be possible to use an IR beam, a light fence that the cat goes through, with nothing on the cat at all. Another possibility is a passive IR detector, with its field of view near floor level. The bar code idea from another answer is a good idea if it works for you.. It needs mirrors to scan all around, unless the barcode is always oriented the right way to be visible. There are ultra sonic methods of communicating too. Not sure about the cat hearing range. These are often around 40kHz. Yes the button cell will be marginal always. Look up some of the ideas and see what you think.
