sedatealluhate asked Is it safe to test a power supply on a desktop that is running perfectly?
I had lightening run in on a desktop, I am trying to find out if it just ruined the power supply and/or the motherboard. The motherboard shows no signs of damage. I want to put the power supply in my working PC to test it, but am worried if this may be detrimental to it.
And got the following answer:
If you're ever in doubt about a power supply, the best thing to do is to replace the power supply. However, there should be no harm to your working system to BRIEFLY install the suspect power supply in it. Before you go to that trouble though, first make sure that the power supply is "worth" saving. If it's a no-name power supply, you want to replace it anyway. (so why bother to test it?) A safer test, BTW, would be to take the working power supply out of the working system and put it in the system that is currently not working. Just be sure to put the power supply back where you found it. (!)
