John E asked Need help with low voltage landscape lighting...?
I have two Malibu low voltage landscape transformers. Each has a timer, and run from approximately 6pm - midnight. I would like to add a photocell to each, so that the lights would come on at dusk (whatever time that is as it changes over the the course of the year) and still turn off at midnight. I was thinking I could set the timers to be on from 3pm to midnight, and then an added photocell would prevent the lights from turning on until dusk, and then the timers would shut down the lights at midnight. Seem possible? Any ideas on where to find add on photocells like this? Many thanks.
And got the following answer:
You do not want to do it the way you described it. You need to remove those tabs on the transformer timing wheel that tell it when to turn on and turn off. Then turn the transformer on, so it is continually on. Then go out and buy an add on unit like this. http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-31217-Digital-Outdoor-Photocell/dp/B0020ML74O There are many different brands available but they all do the same thing. They go on at dusk and then you tell it how many hours to stay on. The one problem you may have is water getting into the connection between the transformer plug and the photocell unit plug. Try to place the unit in an area where it does not get rained upon.
