3xo asked What should I do, seriously?
I am currently a Clarinet Performance major. In short, I can't really stand the clarinet professor (which I realize is my fault; I should have had a lesson with him before I auditioned here, but it's obviously too late right now) because I really don't feel like I'm learning anything. I practice 3-5 hours a day, and just recently figured out basically all of the things that I was doing wrong by myself that my professor did not know how to solve. (For example, my lower lip has been out the whole time - I didn't realize I didn't put enough lip around my lower teeth until one of the students pointed it out to me! As soon as I changed the lip and made it sturdy, I immediately heard better results in terms of intonation and blend.) I'm not really worried for jury examinations (that doesn't mean that I'm not practicing for them; of course I am). However, there's a thought in the back of my mind that I might switch to a Theory major. I came into the university with credit to enter as a freshman into Theory III and I have gotten excellent scores on my exams (I think the lowest score I've had so far is an 91%). Mid-terms have already passed; I've gotten straight A's in both of my Theory (Aural & Written) classes. (Not that I'm doing poorly on clarinet lessons - I have an A in that course also.) I recently purchased Felix Salzer's book on Schenkerian Analysis and I really am fascinated with 20th century techniques. (I plan to do an Independent Study with my theory professor on Schenkerian Analysis as soon as I finish Theory IV.) I also compose as a hobby, and also have experience orchestrating works for wind ensembles (two of which I have had performed); however, I don't think that I could see myself trying to compose as a living. So, my question is, should I switch my major to Theory because of my clarinet professor? Transferring is out of the question now, as I'm also doing another major that is really hard to find near where I live (Mathematics, Actuarial Science). My main plan right now is to see how I do on the jury examination, and then I'll decide on the major, but I would really like some opinions. (I really feel that I know my Theory professor well, and I really like his teaching style.) I am a first-semester freshman, by the way.
And got the following answer:
You are the only one that can answer the question that you have asked. You really have to sit down and decide what is going to make you happy in life. It sounds like you have applied yourself in all your studies and you are not struggling; so if you can handle it; stick with what you are doing until you know for sure what career path you really want to go. Remember life is too short to be stuck doing something you don't like. Good luck.
