I have to measure the angle of an inverted pendulum which sits on top of a remote control car. It is a control engineering project for uni. I've been advised that i can purchase a sensor to do the job, or use a potentiometer. I dont fully understand how either of these solutions work so any advice would be much appreciated.
And got the following answer:
A hall sensor detects magnetic fields and can be used in conjunction with a permanent magnet to convert angular position into a corresponding proportional voltage. A potentiometer is a three-terminal variable resistor, most commonly in a rotary configuration (think rotary volume control), which can be used as a voltage divider. If a voltage is connected across the outer terminals then the middle terminal will have a voltage which is proportional to the angular rotation divided by the total range of rotation (often 270 degrees total). This assumes that the potentiometer is of the common "linear" type. Some pots do have transfer characteristics which are non-linear in nature (logarithmic, S curve, etc). Both of these devices are used in proportional joysticks and are commonly available. You will need to calibrate the output of either device for your particular application. Some links are below. WK
