John asked The sunroof on my 02 cavalier is currently stuck on the tilt setting. What can I do to close it completely?
I have already tried cleaning the track of gunked up grease and lubed it up with some wd40. I really don't want to spend $100 plus by bringing it to a dealership, but the rainy season is coming and I need it fixed asap. Is there something I can do to fix it without replacing motor parts?
And got the following answer:
Hello John. This is a common concern with ALL GM sunroof modules. The computer module that controls the timing of the motor is malfunctioning. The module is programmed at the factory and is non-programmable by us techs. The parts are not serviced separately. If you cannot afford to have the entire sunroof housing assembly replaced (that is the correct repair), you can close the sunroof this way: Lower the forward portion of the headlining, remove the sunroof motor from the housing and close the glass manually. Then reattach the motor and disconnect the switch connector so you do not inadvertently place the glass in the open/vent position. The sunroof housing (includes the module) is around $1200 plus 3.5 hrs labor at the dealer. An independent sunroof/tint shop can either install an aftermarket sunroof housing or get that glass closed for much cheaper than the dealership. If you are adept with tools and know-how, you can perform the manual repair yourself and then have the factory part replaced when you can. Sorry for your concern. Hope this helps. Peace.
