David R asked A good graphics card for a 300 watt power supply?
I have a Compaq Presario CQ5110y, and I'm looking to beef up its graphics capabilities. I want a powerful HDMI graphics card that can do really good gaming. I was really looking at a Radeon HD 6770, but my power supply is only 300 watts, and I don't really have the money to replace it right now. A good answer gets a cookie. $100 price range gets a cake. Any suggestions?
And got the following answer:
hi david you wont get a "powerful" graphics card that will work with a 300w power supply... however the most powerful card that will work with that psu is the "MSI R6670-MD1GD5 Radeon HD 6670 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card"( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127586 ) this is actually a very good card for the price.. and with very low power requirements ( 61w max ) it will easily work with your 300w psu... and i can guarantee this since ive succesfully built a system for a mate with a 300w psu and a XFX hd6670 .... and it ran without any problems in terms of performance ive chosen a gddr5 version of the HD6670... many HD6670,s come with gddr3 memory which means memory clocks are lower.. however this card has a impressive 800mhz core clock and 1gb of gddr5 memory running at 1000mhz ( 4000mhz ddr effective ) theres also 480 stream processors and a 128bit memory interface .. and this is enough to run the latest games at medium detail ( high with less demanding games ) the main difference between the HD6670 and the HD6770 is theres 50% less stream processors and 800mhz less on the memory clock... the core clocks are around the same as is the memory interface in regards to memory bandwidth the HD6670 has 64gb/sec compared to 73gb/sec with the HD6770 .... so when you consider its low power draw the HD6670 is a impressive graphics card and the fastest card that does not require a 6pin pci-express power connector another excellent feature of the HD6670 is powerplay... this basically drops the core and memory clocks to 150mhz core /300mhz memory when web browsing and anything else other than 3d tasks such as gaming..... however as soon as you start a game or a 3d intensive application the clocks will go to their stock values ( 800mhz/4000mhz ) the HD6670 also has a HDMI port which you required and as i mentioned is low powered and will work fine with your 300w psu in regards to nvidia cards i wouldnt bother... the GT440 is around the same in performance to the HD6670 however it requires a 350w psu ( minimum ) ..... finally if you do upgrade your psu to a more powerful model then i would go with the newer "radeon HD7770" .( http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/7000/7770/Pages/radeon-7770.aspx ) ... this is one of the first cards with a insane 1ghz core clock and it uses a 28nm gpu... this basically means it runs very cool... requires less power and overclocks like mad ..... i hope this helps david good luck mate !
