I seen this mini sstc (tesla coil) on youtube and it's primary coil was wound directly around the secondary coil. I didn't know you could do this, does it work just as good as if there were a space between the coils?

With solid state coils, we usually like to make the coupling between the coils as good as high as possible, but of course insulation is a big problem. Winding the primary directly on the secondary is usually asking for trouble even in miniature coils.... A better way is to use maybe say a small piece of PVC pipe with a larger diameter than the secondary and wind the primary on that. I built a large coil with just an air gap between the primary and secondary of a few centimeters, it had continuous flash overs... Usually we want as large a coupling as possible in any coil. This represents how fast we can pump energy into the secondary. In a spark gap coil, there is a practical limit becuase the peak power levels are so large, too high a coupling seems to cause surface flashovers on the secondary. In a solid state coil the peak powers are lower, but the average power is higher, so this is usually not a problem. A higher coupling is desireable becuase we want to minimise the leakage inductance of the primary, which would otherwise cause a phase shift in the primary current, then our power transistors might endup trying to switch/interupt very large currents. The main reason we can usually even build such a device is that the transsistors switch when the current is nearly zero. A DRSSTC gets around this problem by 'tuning out' the leakage inductance of the primary with a capacitor.
