Lady25 asked Can I use a timer with fluorescent lights?
Okay, so I bought a wall switch timer for my exterior lights today. I told the guy assisting me at Lowes that I had read that you could not use a timer with fluorescent lights. He asked me if it had the swirly bulb on he inside and I said yes and he said it would be fine. Why did he ask that question? I can not figure out why. So I get home and read the box of the timer. It reads "DO NOT USE WITH STARTER, COMPACT, FLUORESCENT OR OTHER ELECTRONIC BALLASTS." I get online and some people said it worked for them, others say it did not work for them, and some people state that if you put an incandescent bulb in the bunch, it will work. But then there are others that say the fluorescents will mess up the timer and wear the lights down much quicker...what to believe? Who is correct? And why did the guy working at Lowes tell me it would be okay?
And got the following answer:
First of all the guy at Lowes is a moron. He should keep his mouth shut when he doesn't know the answers. Many times timers will not work with CFLs. As clearly stated on the one you bought. Go to an electrical supply house, they are experts. I beleive you need an Intermatic timer model #ST01C. http://www.intermatic.com/Default.asp?action=subcat&sid=112&cid=43&did=5
