HUEHUA asked How high can you have the alternator voltage at?
I have custom built alternator for my car where I am able to set the voltage to whatever I want. This is a 1999 Toyota Camry LE 4cyl. I was wondering how high I am able to put the voltage at before I run into issues. By the way, my car is built for car audio. I have over 6k watts in my car. The higher the voltage, the better, but obviously don't want it too high or ill run into problems.
And got the following answer:
It depends on the temperature. Standard car batteries can take as much as 15.3 volts at -40F, as little as 13.4 volts at 90C under the hood. Oddly, almost no electronics today cares if you apply 15 volts or 13.5 volts. It will increase current draw to feed the switching regulators that are so ubiquitous today. You are limited to a 7% voltage range in practice so just make the battery happy.
