Turning the generator on and off is relatively simple and straightforward. I don't think that's the end of your question though. The automatic transfer switch is not something which you are allowed to build on your own. The complete switch must be approved for that function. You can not put one together out of parts that you buy at the electrical shop. Several items are needed for this to work. You need to detect loss of AC power. After a short time interval the generator engine will start. Once the engine is stabilized the transfer switch will activate for the generator to supply power. When normal AC returns another timer begins to ensure it is stable. After a few minutes the transfer switch will return to the normal position. The engine will be allowed to cool down for a short time and then is turned off. Most commercially available systems with automatic transfer capabilities will take care of everything. Many will even start the engine every two weeks to ensure it is operating properly. A manually controlled system is much easier to install and will be easier on your bank account. During a power outage you would bring the portable generator outside and start the engine. Plug it into the transfer panel and throw the switch to restore power. When power comes back on you throw the switch the other way, shut off the generator and put it away. Read my generator page for more information.
