mcpenguin5 asked Why do the instructions on electric timers tell you not to use them with Flourescent bulbs?
I would think that a timer turning the light on and off would be no different from an on/off switch.
And got the following answer:
Electronic timers use a bit of electricity while they are off to keep the time. This requires a complete circuit. Typically, the wiring available at the switch point does not include an independent connection to the neutral wire, so the timer will pass a very small current through the light bulb to complete the circuit. This small amount of electricity is not a problem with a standard incandescent bulb. It is not enough to create any light, although the bulb may put off just a bit of heat. The problem is the circuitry in a standard florescent bulb does not allow this small current to pass, so there is no way for the timer to keep time. Also, the small current can ruin or shorten the life of the circuitry in the bulb. There are some special CFL's available now that will work with this type of timer. They are more expensive and hard to find. Read the package carefully.
