Doughty asked How to build a high performance 350?
I just bought a chevy 350 2 bolt main I plan on making it a 383 stroker I want to get at least 400 horse power how can I accomplish this? I need every detail please. This is my first rebuild so any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance
And got the following answer:
Being your 1st build and the mild 400 HP goal I would go 355 rather than 383. The 383 stroker build is a more custom engine build that takes more skill or more money to do. It needs clearance work (grinding) on the bottom of cylinder bores, oil pan rails, rod bolt shoulders, may need a small base circle cam, full balance job, matching the right internal or external balance parts, etc A 350 bored .030" over (355) is a much easier build for the 1st timer and only will give up 25-35 HP to the 383 400 HP 355 is no prob and in fact can be done with very mild parts. 350 block bored .030" over flat top 5 to 7 cc pistons 9.75 to 10.25:1 compression Stock 1996-00 vortec truck 350 heads Howards 98212 valve springs 214/224@.050" cam with around .455"/.480" lift edelbrock rpm vortec intake 600 cfm carb Best bang for the buck rebuilt kit is from northern auto parts. $190 Upgrade it with double roller timing chain, speed pro/sealed power 214/224 cam, flat top speed pro/sealed power hyper pistons, HV oil pump, etc etc These upgrade will bring kit up to around $350 Use a set of fel pro 1094 head gaskets if block is un decked
