I signed up for crew for my high school's musical Grease, and I was wondering what I should be expecting. I am working lights. What will I be doing, exactly, and should I prepare myself? Is there something I should wear to be more comfortable? Thanks!
And got the following answer:
ok first good work, lights can be fun. what it will be like depends on what type of equipment and how many instruments your school has. If they have a simple 16 channel dimmer board coordinating lights can get tricky. there will be 16 sliding switches that control one (or more) lights each. you made need to slide down #2, 4, 8, 12, slowly while at the same time bringing up # 1 11, 17, 19. or if you only have a few lights it may just be on at the start of the show, off at the end. If they have state f the art programmable lighting, you ill spend a long time programming the cues into the computer, but when it comes to working the actual show, it will be as simple as hitting the GO button on your cues. Depending on if you have others helping, you may be up in the lights aiming and focusing the instruments so they light a particular area of the stage, and you may need to gel them (gels are like colored cellophane squares used to change the color of the light to change the mood or location of a scene) for dress, typically anyone on a crew, including lighting, wears all black. however if you are going to be in an actual booth behind the audience, it may not matter. your teacher will let you know. good luck!
