Sarah asked My laptop wont start what is wrong with it?
My laptops power cord was yanked by my daughter too many times and it stopped charging yesterday night. I decided to get a screw driver and unscrewed the screws from my HP Pavilion G7 1365dx laptop and tried to pry the laptop open. Note: I always had issues with the hinges that hold the laptop open and closed. Anyways I looked around a bit and slightly touched the power supply adapter area and then I closed it up and screwed it back together. Well today I went and bought a new power cable and it started to charge now. But whenever I push the power button to turn it on it does nothing. The computer wont turn on. What could possibly have happened to my laptop?
And got the following answer:
Depending on the laptop, the power button may be part of its own assembly which comes off as a panel. I can't tell whether this is true from looking at pictures of the laptop. If it is true and you opened the laptop, you may have undid the ribbon cable that goes from the power button to the motherboard. It's best to start at the wall and work your way to the laptop though. A multimeter would be useful for this. Is the wall supplying power? Is the charger receiving power from the wall? Is the charger supplying power at the connector end when unplugged from the laptop? Is the laptop receiving power from the charger at the power input on the laptop when connected? After you've confirmed the laptop is receiving power, I would find the pads to the power button on the motherboard (as that's the lowest you can go to turn the laptop on) and bridge them with a piece of conductive material to see if the laptop powers on. You can also alternatively just press the power button if you are sure you didn't damage or unhook anything from the motherboard to power button assembly.
