Sure, you could make such a device. Unfortunately it would require upwards of 90 D batteries in series to reach approximately 110 V AC output. Or about 190 to get to 230 V AC. Those figures don't take into account the parallel connection of those numbers to get any appreciable amperage available, as they will supply only about 250 mA at best and not for very long. Got a big, good backpack? 😉 Such devices can be made, but they will be larger and heavier to carry about than you may envision. They would require at least a few gel cells producing 12 V or better each and must charge for a long time between uses so they can provide, at best, a couple of hours of power at low amperage / wattage ratings. Not a very practical solution either. Compare all of this to a 120 V AC @ 15 amp service in a house in the US that produces ~ 1200 Watts for as long as you pay the electric bill. About the only practical use of an inverter, which is a device that takes DC power and creates AC power, is when they are installed in a car / truck / van where they can be directly connected to a lead acid battery with a healthy reserve of amperage and recharged with the turn of the ignition key. These have application to run small hand tools, communications gear, recharge cell phones and power other light duty appliances. If you have to ask how to make something that deals with a fairly high voltage, current or wattage, then perhaps you shouldn't. Such devices are inherently hazardous to your health to construct, use and maintain if you don't have the exact knowledge to keep yourself safe. This is to say that this is an advanced topic that requires quit a bit of design skill, wherever you may have gotten it. A more practical approach can sometimes yield a satisfactory method of supplying power to a device. Many devices can be powered primarily from DC provided from a battery of some type. My advice would be to investigate the possibility of having a portable device in the first place designed to do the job away from an outlet. It is also possible that a competent person could convert an appliance to run from DC. This doesn't make the design any less hazardous as DC current can kill you just as dead as AC. Mull it over, keep asking questions and learn. Then apply it and you might solve your problem(s) yet.
