Sara Michelle Morris asked I require a mechanical timer that can switch on and off in 5 minutes over the period of about 6 hours.?
I am exhibiting for my final year in Fine Art in three weeks. I have a major problem with a lot of my works. I require a mechanical timer that can switch on and off in 5 minutes over the period of about 6 hours. I have found some that allow 15 minutes on and off but this will not work. Any advice on where I can buy these or what I can do? Any help is much appreciated
And got the following answer:
It has to be mechanical, no electricity (battery even?) can be used? The only way I can think of to do it is to have a cascade of mechanical timers (timer one triggers after 5 minutes and triggers timer two, etc) You can built one like a water clock or a weighted clock but I'm not sure you have the time of space for your project. For instance, a pendulum swinging each second, with an attached cam that ratchets a weight (like a steel bearing or something) along a wormscrew with enough threads (300) to take up 5 minutes to move the object along until it finally dropped to do the work (trigger a release, hit a button, etc) You'd need a tray of 120 such weights ready to get plunked into position as the first one hit the button/switch/etc to cover the six hour period.
