Bert Betts asked I am replacing a wall timer. Only two wires in box. Ge smart digital times has 4 wires and will not work.?
Need suggestions
And got the following answer:
Your switch has 2 insulated wires. This is a single-pole switch. Timer has 4 wires: green, red, black, white. 1) Connect green wire to bare ground wire. 2) Connect 2 switch wires to timer red and timer black, choose either one for now. 3) Located in back of electric box are white wires that are twisted together and covered with wire nut. These are neutral wires. Timer white wire connects to these wires. This will power electronics located inside timer. 4) If electric box does not have white neutral wires described above, then connect timer white wire to bare ground wire along with timer green wire. 5) Turn power ON. Activate timer by pressing on-off button, or door that covers button, or oval on-off button. If Load turns ON then timer is wired correctly. If timer does not turn ON, then reverse timer black and timer red wire. 6) If lights are blinking instead of working correctly, then white wire is connect to red wire and should be changed as shown in instructions above. 7) This wiring applies to in-wall programmable timers and non-spring-type countdown timers made by Swilight, Tork, Wattstopper, Lutron timers, Leviton timers, Woods, Utilitec, Hagar, GE, Sylvania, Westek, and Intermatic timers without battery. 8) Wiring is different for Brinks, Aube, and Intermatic timers with battery, since these specific timers also work for 3-way switching, or don't require white neutral wire.
