As you know they are generally used in Security / Detonator circuits. A reed switch relies on a magnet to keep it in either a normally closed (NC) or normally open (NO) configuration. As the name suggests, it is a switch, same as a normal light switch. The difference being that it will be closed or open depending on the proximity of the magnet to the switch. They are generally used where there is a door/window/box panel etc. The reed switch will be situated inside the box/door jam/window jam and the magnet will be next to it. When the door is opened the reed switch is removed from the influence of the magnet and depending on the circuit construction will activate an alarm response, etc. Reed switches are easily detectable with any magnetic anomaly detection circuit, and bypassed using a simple permanent magnet. The reed switch is a simple one to use and is generally used in generic circuits. Others that are harder to bypass are your ultrasonic devices/Air pressure sensors/quad detectors/ optical (Light) circuits/radar etc. Everything can be bypassed.
