Hello, I'm trying to start a new project but I'm having trouble figuring out what direction I want to take when it comes to motor control. Basically I have 2 micro motors that I took out from electronic devices. I'm fairly sure they are dc motors but I'm not sure what their specs are. Anyway, I need to know if there is a way I can program these two motors without using an arduino and minimal electronic components because I have a very limited amount of space. So here is the way I would program the motors... I click a switch that starts the motor and moves it a certain degree in a specific direction. (Is there anyway the motor will know when to stop?) After that, the second motor would begin rotating (Basically a trigger from the first motor to set off the second motor) a certain degree in a specific direction. After the second motor completes it turn, the first motor would begin rotating in the opposite direction. After all of this, a button would be pressed or switch flipped to reverse all of the actions (the first motor rotates in its original direction, the second motor reverses its direction, and then the first motor rotates in the opposite direction from its original direction). Basically, there are three movements that have to be achieved... the first motor to run clockwise and hold its position, the second motor would then rotate counterclockwise and hold its position, at that point (when the second motor completes its turn), the first motor returns the its original position by rotating counterclockwise. After all of these, a complete reverse needs to be done by the push of a button... the first motor rotates clockwise again, the second motor then rotates clockwise, and lastly, the first motor rotates counterclockwise. I know all of this probably seems extremely confusing but this is as much information as I can give. I'm working on something that I'm afraid will be stolen. I'm very paranoid, I apologize. Anyway, I would love any advice I can get. Once again, if there is anyway I can accomplish this without using giant speed controllers, an arduino or microcontrollers/ICs that require an additional PCB, that would be absolutely wonderful. If not, I will try my best to set it up so that they all trigger each other mechanically. Thank you very much! Matt

Sounds entirely mechanical to me. You want one of the motors to possess a cam which will switch itself off and the other motor on. The complexity comes in the full behavior you want. You may need several cams for each motor to properly handle the microswitches involved. But it doesn't sound too complex. If you had a 3D printer, you'd just use Sketchup, crank out the gcode, and print the parts and use a few microswitches to get this done. The motors will "know" when to stop because the cam/microswitch will know when it gets into the right position. There is little reason to be paranoid. Not that you won't get ripped off -- that may certainly happen. But for other reasons that are too complicated to get deeply into. But there is only so much capital in the world and only so much talent and human time available to bring something to completion and into the market and there are almost an infinite number of really good ideas deserving to be pursued. All competing for the same scarce resources of time and materials and marketing. Even really good ideas are worth only a dime a dozen. I'd be more concerned about achieving your goals well and getting the best advice you can along the way and less concerned about getting ripped off.
