On compact florescent light bulb instructions is a warning to not use them in connection with light timers. What is the reason for this warning?
And got the following answer:
Some electronic timers pass a very small current through the light circuit continuously to monitor the switch status. This is not enough to light an incandescent bulb, but it is enough to sometimes cause a florescent to flicker. More importantly, it will severely reduce the life of the bulb. Other electronic timers alter the frequency of the AC current supplied to the circuit due to the nature of the electronic switch. Again not a problem for incandescent bulbs, but this will cause a florescent to be dim an again severely reduce the life. Some have both issues, depending upon the design. Some older timers are mechanical and should not cause a problem, but it is hard to tell which type you have without the original packaging or instructions. There are some new timers available that will work with florescent bulbs, including CFLs, but these usually require a connection to the neutral wire in the circuit. The neutral may or may not be available in your switch box, depending upon how the light circuit is wired. If it is not there, then you would need to modify the wiring to use this type of timer.
