My thermostat has two switches. The first switch has HEAT, OFF, and COOL position. The second switch has FAN ON and FAN AUTO positions. I understand the FAN ON, and FAN AUTO, but what's the point of having HEAT and COOL instead of just ON and OFF? The less expensive thermostats require you to manually switch it from controlling the heater to controlling the air conditioner hence the first switch labeled heat, off and cool. The second switch controls the fan. Now more expensive thermostats will have an auto on the first switch as well and will switch between using the heater and using the air conditioner but they usually have two temperature settings, one for the heater and one for the airconditioner and you're required to set the temperature for the heater a certain amount lower than the setting for the airconditioner so that it won't oscillate between the two. That would not have been the way I would've designed the thermostats, I would've designed them to switch modes to heat if it got cooler then the air conditioner set temperature by a certain margin and then switch from heat if it got hotter then the heater set point by a certain margin but when I went for a fully programmable top of the line Honeywell thermostat, that isn't what I found, I wound up with just the two set temperatures with the heater temperature having to be set lower than the airconditioner temperature by a certain amount which means that neither can be set to my ideal desired temperature for either mode of operations. It gets more complicated when you have a two story house as the HVAC unit for the two floors are separate and if you set then wrong, you can wind up with the top floor on aircondition full blast while the first floor is on heat full blast. Since you don't want heat, switch the first switch to cool and leave the second switch on auto.
