What I understand is that you don't have access to an ignition controlled power source. You want to only get power from the battery when the engine is running. You have access to a direct connection to the battery which is apparently aways live. Answer: Use a voltage monitoring circuit or device that controls a relay. THe small circuit does take a small amount of power from the battery but only in the order of 50 milli amps. Such a small draw on the battery would take days if not weeks to drain the battery. But far less than a much larger draw that would kill a battery in minutes or hours if left on. (If you use a micro controller you could cut that standby current draw to micro amps) When the engine is off the DC voltage drops to 12 volts (the voltage of the battery) When the engine is running the alternator supplies power to the electrical system in the car which is also used to charge the battery. Alternator voltage is usually 13.8 V to 15V (maybe a little more). So a simple comparator circuit could be used to monitor the battery voltage as an input and when the higher voltage is detected the comparator turns on a relay which allows the battery voltage to flow to the larger current hungry device. http://home.cogeco.ca/~rpaisley4/Comparators.html A micro controller is a little easier to use as its operation is programmed and voltage levels and activation levels are digitized internally to specific numbers . THe analog comparator circuit above needs to be tweaked to operate properly. A micro controller can also put itself to sleep and wake up every few seconds or minutes to check the voltage and operate the relay if a higher voltage is detected. Net result is a micro controller based solution will draw micro amps in standby mode. You need to use a zener voltage regulator which is a 12V zener diode and a series resistor which will be used as a voltage reference for Vs. Vp will be a direct connection to the battery. The Intersil 7673 is an automatic battery back up IC. It has an internal switch that gets turned on when Vp>Vs. Since we are going to use a 12V reference for Vs this chip won't supply power to Vout unless the engine is running which will make Vp 13.8V or more. When the car shuts down the voltage drops to 12V and Vs = Vp and should turn off the chip . If it doesn't then add a diode in series with Vp and it will drop 0.6V across it making Vp = 11.4 when the engine is off and 13.2V when the engine is ON.
