thorno74 asked Why are Macintosh components so much more expensive than PC?
After a liftime of computers I am washing my hands of PC's and switching to Mac. I'm tired of the crashing, viruses, and unstable operating systems. I want to build my own system but Apple components are more expensive than I thought? Would it be easier to by a complete system?
And got the following answer:
Probably. The reason the parts are so expensive is because Apple has a stranglehold on the parts suppliers. PC components are made free-market, meaning that pretty much anyone with the knowledge and equipment can make parts and programs for them. This allows for healthy competition with other companies in regards to price, performance and quality. Mac components are required to pass Apple's compatibility standards and a few other hoops to jump through I imagine. They have less competititon and therefore higher prices. This is the reason for a Mac's stability, but it is also a major limiting factor in a Mac's ability to use certain programs and hardware.
