maritzita asked How many hours/day should a fridge be 'running' and how many should it be defrosting (I must do this manually)?

So, my fridge is broken. It does not defrost at all, so the freezer works well (maybe too well) but the fridge itself barely gets cooled. Frigidaire came by, looked at it, and has ordered a replacement (which, mind you, they expect me to arrange pick up for. But I digress.) Until I get a new fridge, I have to keep unplugging the fridge (to defrost it) and plugging it back in. Otherwise, all of my food will spoil. My question, therefore, is how often should I be plugging in and unplugging my fridge? What would be the 'regular' such cycle for a working fridge. So far, I have been unplugging it for a couple of hours each day, but that does not seem to be working well. Help! Thank you! Thanks for the help! Current situation for clarity: The refrigerator runs continuously. From my raw understanding of the situation, this is causing all of the cold air to accumulate in the freezer, and none of it gets down to the fridge as these 'channels' are frozen. Defrosting (unplugging) it for a few hours allows some of this ice to melt, and the cold air to get through to the fridge. However, a few hours after being plugged in, ice must form in the 'channels' again and no cold air gets to the fridge :(. I liked the timer suggestion... if only I could know how long I want the fridge to stay on and off... Thanks again!

And got the following answer:

Get a thermometer. There is a digital one with a cord that measures indoor an outdoor temp which would be great here. They cost about 6$. http://www.amazon.com/Timex-TX5040-Electronic-Outdoor-Thermometer/dp/B000HU8AG4/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1260653680&sr=1-14 Put the readout in the freezer and the end 1/2 way into the fridge since your fridge is slower cool and check it often to adjust the on off manual cycle. You want the fridge between 34 and 40 degrees. The freezer -5 +/- 5 Put the fridge on a surge protector on the counter so it's easy to get to ..and adjust as the day goes. Once you know what sequence you need to do the process, get a timer on the unit. They are about 6$ too. http://www.amazon.com/Intermatic-TN311C-Heavy-Duty-Grounded-Timer/dp/B00002N5FO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1260654022&sr=1-3 has 3 settings and is ment for heavy duty. So for 12$ you can keep things safe and not ruin 100's in food. Also if the refridgerator is not FULL put water filled jugs in there to fill it. they will help retain the cold. *******As a note - Anyone who has a not so full fridge, wether things are working or not, should follow this practice of the jugs it keeps the compressor from going on as often and saves money. (Change the water weekly if you don't drink it.) Every time you open the fridge it lets in warm air, water retains tempature. By adding jugs to fill the space less warm air gets in and the jugs radiate the cold back. http://www.iwilltry.org/b/projects/adjust-your-freezer-thermostats/ It rots when things go wrong that are supposed to work and you get extra charges for something that wasen't your fault not to mention the inconvience. Life is bumpy like that. What was that saying? 😛 *******Added 12/13 I understand your frustration..a refridgerator that is working will go on and off itself when the temp reaches a certian figure inside. Your house temp. The number of times the fridge opens and closes humidity all are facters unique to your home. Where mine may cycle 1 time and hour for 15 minutes in the winter. In the summer when the kids and the neighbor kids are in and out every 2 minutes and taking refridgerator baths while I'm not looking. It could kick on 5 times in an hour. So the thermometor is your best defense at the moment. Anyway Happy Holiday! This will go down in your family as the Christmas the refridgerator broke.
