I am about to graduate with a degree in electrical engineering, but I always like to make sure of things when it comes to safety. I took apart an old PC to get some spare parts--DC motors, fans, wires, housing, etc. In particular, the power supply seems useful. It provides various DC voltage levels and can source a lot of power. I'd like to use it as a benchtop power supply for various electronics projects. I would of course take all necessary precautions to make sure it's safe to the best of my knowledge, but I just wanted to ask--is there any glaring issue I should be aware of? Other than general high-voltage electrical safety, is there anything in particular I should know? Thanks so much.

Hi Lenny, No there is not. A PSU is safe for use inside or outside the pc case. As long as you do not overload the psu and respect the different voltages on the different sets of wires, you are good to go. If you want to use the psu for other purposes than hooking it up to a motherboard, you will not get any juice out of it unless you connect the appropiate wires that simulates the motherboard's power button to engage the powersupply. To turn on the power supply without a mother board, you simply have take the ATX connector(the big one) and insert a paper clip into the green wire socket, and any of the black wire sockets. Obviously you can solder wires into them and hook a switch up.
