I want to set up an automated switch that turns on a device (12 or 24V DC, low duty) for approximately 60 seconds every 24 hours. I want to keep this simple and low cost. What kind of electrical parts would I need and where would I get them? Does anyone know of an online guide to get me started? (I'm a Mech. E student working on a project. My understanding of circuits doesn't go much beyond simple RLC.)

24 hours is too long for simple electronic timers like 555 chips. So it gets complicated. A simple approach (not very good) is to setup a CMOS 555 to oscillate at a period of 24 hours/1000 = 24x3600/1000 = 86.4 seconds and then use 3 LS90s to divide it by 1000. Then use a 555 one shot triggered by that with a width of 60 seconds. But the problem you don't mention is how to set it. And how inaccurate it is. Second solution, get an electronic timer. Perhaps $10. They have a clock that you set, and then you program the turn on time and turn off time. You have 1 minute resolution. And great accuracy.
