Maria Meadow Rose asked Townhome community took away our light switches?
We live in a very nice community of rental townhouses in a great, safe city. This week, we were warned that contractors were going to be given keys to our homes and would be walking in anytime during these days to work on electrical stuff and to keep our dogs locked up in rooms. We were already mad at this and thought it was weird. Well, when we woke up (late admittedly) this morning, it seems they had already come in our house and changed the light switch that is used for the outdoor light. As in, it went from a double light switch (one switch is for something different, the other used for the outside light) to now just ONE single switch. The switch for the other thing. Now the light outside - not just ours but everyone's light - is on. This is the first day so we don't know if it has been on all day and will just be on forever....or if they want to be the ones controlling it and they'll leave it on all night and turn it off during the day. Is this normal? Our family hates this. We usually never turn it on at night and now our bills will be higher. We think it's unfair that we no longer have a choice and we want to address this at the townhouse office. Why are they doing this, is it okay to do this, and what should we say to them?
And got the following answer:
You need to check the agreement you signed with the Homeowners Association when you bought the place. The may indeed have the right to do what they did, although it seems outrageous. Homeowners Associations can be horrendous, and personally, I refuse to ever live somewhere that has one. They can dictate how you live to an extreme degree, and failure to abide by the rules can be heavily fined. Worse, the agreement is often bound to the deed, so you can't just stop paying and ignore them. The people who sit on Homeowners Association boards are very often absolutely the worst sort of invasive, self-righteous little busybodies, who are quite thrilled to stick their noses into literally everything you do, and to tell you how to do it their way. It's terrible. Read the agreement carefully, and attempt to determine if such alterations are specifically permitted. Then, go get a written explanation. It's probably going to be some misguided 'safety' issue excuse. You are not likely to get anywhere other than filing a formal complaint, which will get you exactly nothing. If the agreement does not seem to permit the alterations, you can threaten a lawsuit...but can you afford that for a light switch? If it bugs you enough, take the bulb out of the fixture. Or, leave it in but unscrew it enough that it won't light. When you get frustrated enough....move. Or...you can reinstall the switch 🙂
