John O asked Where to find a cheap slim power supply?
Hi, I have a friend whose looking for a power supply. Ideally somewhere in the 500-600 watt range with a 24 pin motherboard connector. The only snag lies in the enclosure. She has a slim form machine so I need a power supply that will fit in a 4 inch wide case. Ideally it should be around 100 bucks or under. If anyone could suggest some I'd be much obliged. Thanks in advance.
And got the following answer:
I wouldn't spend that little on a PSU. seriously its one area you do not decide to save in. A cheap PSU will not give the full specification output. It also will become unstable under loads and tend to drop voltages causing things like graphics cards to randomly cut out. The worse case is when it decides to let go (will happen sooner than a quality PSU) it will take you whole system with it. A good quality PSU should prevent all the innards frying when that happens (believe me, my gaming PC went up in smoke costing me about £700 of damage to components). For a budget build Ive made for people I used the FSP Blue Storm II 500 after reading reviews and recommendmations from a local computer shop and so far haven't had any go up. I don't know if it will fit your case but you could look that up yourself.
