Its for a school project. It just needs to be small. I need it to rise. I was thinking of something like an upside down garage door because that would be perfect. It would lay flat under my project until I needed it to rise. Please any pointers.
And got the following answer:
Small electric motors are usually too fast, so you need one with a gearbox so it is only turning one rev a second or so. Maybe you could use an electric screw driver or battery drill on a slow speed. Then it needs some wiring or a switch to connect it to the battery, and reverse it. Normally this is automated using limit switches and safety items but I assume you are happy to just make it manually controlled. The motor shaft can be a drum winch that winds cord to pull the "wall" up or down. Add pulleys or eyelets as guides where needed. I am not sure you want a "pop-up" gate or a "fold-up" gate. The first link shows a pop-up. It has columns at the side that are the full height, with chains in them. These are like an endless belt. The same motor can drive both sides if it drives a shaft between the columns, but it is not so simple to make. A fold up gate is just hinged to the floor and lying on the ground, so you could walk over it when it is open. It is pulled up through 90 degrees by a lever and cord. The lever is near the hinge and vertical when it is lying down. This is much simpler to make. The second link shows a fold-down garage door. This or a roller door could be made to rise up with strong channels on either side to guide it, but these seem difficult to make. Perhaps a roller blind could be used somehow with a supporting frame to hold it up, and cords in the frame either side pulling it up.
