I have an intercom that needs a cable that is single core/strand, 0.5mm minimum. The intercom runs off a 6v dc power supply. I have a single core 2mm cable that I can get for free, is it worth trying it, or would it be too big for the low voltage 6v power supply?

In wiring, there is almost no such thing as "too big" in a wire size. It's easy to have a wire too small, but rarely can you have one too large. Wires may be considered too large because of physical constraints. For example, you wouldn't be able to connect a #10 wire to a typical 15 amp household electrical outlet because the wire is too large in diameter to fit the screw terminals of the outlet and too stiff to fit in the space provided in the outlet's box. But electrically, it's hard to have a wire too big.
