I'm making a time delayed jewelry box for my girlfriend and I can't seem to find what I need. There are plenty of digital countdown timers but they're all too big. It needs to be VERY small. Like the size of a cracker. I don't even need the display, just the timing mechanism. It also has to have some kind of alarm or action when it hits zero so I can trigger the box to open. Also, it has to countdown for about 6 weeks and run on a small battery. Any ideas on where to find it or how I can make it? Thanks
And got the following answer:
You mean like one of these? Most things don't really need the display to work, but people want to see the time. You can probably use much smaller batteries if you aren't driving the display. Just use the alarm output to trigger a relay. Do you really think you can make a box that is bride-proof for six weeks? It'll get dropped, washed, kicked, sat on, etc. "accidentally" until it opens or you have to open it... Of course, with a ring/jewelry box attached, it'll take her about 2 seconds to figure out what's going on (you're proposing!). Think about using a blank face clock and let her wonder what the countdown is for (she'll probably figure that out, too) -- then give her the ring (or start the scavenger hunt!) when it goes off... BTW, do you really think YOU can hold out on what's going on for SIX WEEKS? I bet you'd be lucky if she didn't find a way to get it out of you in SIX DAYS... :^) Congratulations and Good Luck!
