bananacreamcakewithfudge asked Put heating pad by thermostat to lower apartment temperature?
I want my apartment to get cooler at night and warmer during the day. The thermostat doesn't have any timer capabilities. It is a digital thing. I was wondering if I could heat something up at night and put it under it to make it think that it was hot and disable the furnace at night. The pad would cool down through the night and by the morning it would be at normal temperature. I live in Chicago so it is the furnace that is running at the moment, not the air conditioning... unfortunately. I struggle to get up in the morning. I really struggle. If it is cool, I'm lying there for at least an hour or so and playing mind games on how to convince myself how to leave the comfort of my bed. It is a rented apartment, not sure if I am allowed to change it.
And got the following answer:
Why don't you just turn down the temperature when you go to sleep? Or go and buy a programmable thermostat which you can get for 50 bucks for a cheap one. I must admit that I do a similar thing. My thermostat is directly above a lamp in my house. When the lamp is on it keep the thermostat warmed just enough to keep the furnace from running as it normally would. I kind of like it because it fools my wife and kids and they don't touch the stat ever because they think it is warmer in here than it actually is.
