Most very early electrical circuits used inductors, switches, transformers. the next generation used tubes from 1900 -1955, the next generation used discrete transistors 1955 thru 1965, then they started using IC's like op amps, timers, gates, counters, flip flops, discrete digital logic 1966 thru 1975. Finally they started using large scale IC's with 100's thousands and even millions of transistors in every chip. This stage of electronics is still going on, just getting more and more dense.
