Nanoosh asked What is the advantages and disadvantages of the venetian blinds and do you suggest the Duet Honeycomb room?
before i order it?Room darkning blinds! merci in advance
And got the following answer:
I've had both kinds of blinds, so here is my take: Venetian blinds: Con: Not enough room-darkening as light still penetrates between slats not enough insulation from cold, as air goes through every slat Maintenance - lots of detail dusting! No remote control option Cords (if you use them) tend to get tangled when kids and guests use them unless you heave them up and out of the way (and they are heavy) you never get an unobstructed view out of your window...and when you do, they look a bit sloppy to me Old-style venetians get bent and battered over time, very ugly faux wood venetians will sag if on large windows Pro: nice, traditional look, both inside and outside of a home more likely to appeal to a wider pool of buyers on resale Honeycomb shades: Con: if you want a traditional look, you sacrifice that You have to choose between light-filtering vs. black-out unless you find the product I mention below Pro: they have a clean, contemporary look that doesn't look out of place in any decor excellent insulation, with single, double and triple cell options top-down-bottom-up allows for privacy plus an unobstructed view any amount of window you choose easier to brush/vacuum off dust - cells hold their shape remote operation option a black backing to your shades will give the exterior of your home a clean look vs lots of little stripies from venetians I was at either Home Depot or Lowe's and I saw an awesome blind product (but sorry, can't remember the manufacturer or name of the product) that had the ability to switch between regular light-filtering cells, black-out-backed cells and of course, top-down bottom-up control for revealing the window however one wants. Brilliant option for a bedroom or media room! An interesting product that combines the two concepts of venetian and cell technology is the Silhouette line. http://www.hunterdouglas.com/our-products-detail.jsp?id=1#/PV/ The light control will be similar to regular venetian blinds, but they offer a tad more privacy when your blinds are open, as well as slightly easier maintenance, and a simplified cord system. Venetians and Honeycombs are both good-looking options, though true venetians - once banged up - look awful and cannot be fixed. In fact, at my last home I chose venetian style in wood for the front of the house because they gave a consistent look to the home that didn't look cheap (I had a custom sunburst window to deal with, and thought all the pleated shades I saw on other people's sunburst windows looked cheap...and the plantation style custom piece we did blended great with the venetian style wood blinds). But I liked the honeycomb shades in the back of the house the best. Perfect insulation on all those north-facing windows, they looked clean and chic from outside and inside. I have discovered that neither time nor energy expand with time, and it does not make sense to me to purchase things that require a lot of maintenance. I don't see myself purchasing venetian blinds in the future for that reason.
