Stephen asked how to replace a light timer?
the old timer is in a 4 gang box and had two black wires connected to it. The new switch has black (line), red (load), white (neutral) & green (ground). I tires to connect new red and new black to old the wires the old switch was connected to but that didn't work. The light turns on but shuts right off. Ii reversed them also to no avail. In the box i have a lone loose red wire and a bunch of white wires capped but not connected ot any of the switches. I'nm trying to figure what to do with the 4 wires in my new switch to get it to function.
And got the following answer:
It sounds like the old timer was a mechanical type and the new one is electronic. The mechanical one didn't need electrical power to function, it was just a spring and clockwork operated switch. The new one needs power, a hot (typically black) and a neutral (white) to power the timer. You can use the hot switch leg, connected to the black of the new timer, plus any available neutral in the box. Just make absolutely sure that it is a neutral, a white wire should be marked with colored electrical tape if it's used for any other purpose, but it isn't always done. Once you have those connected, the red wire connects to the black wire that feeds the light and the ground (green) connects to ground.
