Hi I am trying to figure out the best method to reduce DC 30V from a power supply to 5V DC and trying to limit the current in this 5V circuit to never increase more than 10mA ever? I really don't want to lose any power as heat. Transformer losses are acceptable if there is no other way. Resistance loss as heat is not.
And got the following answer:
A DC-DC converter is best if you want the minimum heat losses. They can acheive 90% efficiencies. The L5973D regulator will supply up to several amps, download the datasheet. The problem is that these regulators are designed for currents in the amps, and their efficiency goes down at low currents. The L5973D, for example, has a quiescent current spec of 5 mA, so you will have 150mW of heat. And this will not answer your 10 mA limit. And the design is complicated, lots of chokes and capacitors. A one resistor and 5 v zener is easiest, as the resistor can be selected for 10mA of current, and you will never exceed that. Dissipation will be 300 mW. A 3k ohm 1/2 watt resistor would be ideal. email me .
